"Red Scarf Girl" Discussion

I figure since not all of our members were at the meeting and we always have some great discussion on the book and side chats, it would be a good idea for all of us to put up some of our major points that "meant" something to each of us from this book. Thus giving everyone the opportunity to feel that they fully participate in book club (even if they couldn't make a meeting).

Since I'm honest and didn't read past chapter 2 (or maybe it was 3) I was really taken back by the "four olds". How anything really could be interpreted into being one of the four olds and there for you could be chastised and singled out for that. Example of this is the pant leg size.

December Meeting

I have to ask.... Did we agree on the 16th? If so... I was wrong and can't make it. I forgot that I have a friends holiday party to go to that night. You can still have the meeting I just wont be able to go. But if I'm wrong about the 16th and we said another night please let me know so I can mark my calendar

This song is da bomb

I downloaded the song from the commercial that Maureen and I were talking about. the name of the song is "mad world" by tears for fears...it's very very good and the lyrics are top notch...i highly recommend you download the cover by Gary Jules...check out the lyrics...i think they're beautifully melancholy

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere
And their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow
And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very
Mad World
Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday
Made to feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen
Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher tell me what's my lesson
Look right through me, look right through me

The Master List

We, the fabulous, have read....

Nickel and Dimed (NF)
On Bullshit (Academic paper)
Elizabeth I (NF)
In Cold Blood (Historical F)
Candy Girl (Memoir)
Sweet Hereafter (F)
Pope Joan (Historical F)
Memoirs of a Geisha (F)

For those of you that missed Nickel and Dimed, it was written by Barbara Ehrenreich. She went undercover and worked various min wage jobs to see if a human being could actually survive without public assistance. She has a great sense of humor and I found the book to be bewildering and entertaining at the same time

Books we've read

I was just thinking that maybe we should post on here the past books we have read. And then we can keep adding to the list the books as we finish them. Just as a benchmark so we can see where we've come from and also for future book choices we can see if we are a more fiction, nonfiction, memoirs type of book club. It's just and idea. Please let me know what you think.

At last Red Scarf Girl...

Red Scarf finally arrived in yesterday's mail. I'm almost 1/2 way through it. I'm hoping to have it finished by Sunday afternoon. If anyone wants it when I'm done let me know. I've also finished with Lies at the Altar, if anyone wants that as well.
